ABOUT SHELL
Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies.
Their business is divided into four segments; Upstream, Integrated Gas, Downstream, and Projects & Technology.
In Upstream, they focus on the exploration for oil and natural gas and on the development and operation of major new projects where their technology and expertise create value for the resource owners.
In Integrated Gas, they focus on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the conversion of gas to liquid (GTL), allowing the gas to be safely stored and transported to markets around the world.
In Downstream, they convert crude oil into refined products, which are transported and marketed worldwide for household, industrial, and transport use. In addition, they produce and sell petrochemicals for industrial use worldwide. Shell's activities in oil sands mining in North America are also part of the Downstream business.
Their Projects & Technology organization is responsible for delivering new development projects and for research and development that lead to innovative and profitable investments for the future.
CHALLENGES
- Pen and paper documentation and inspections were time consuming
- Equipment control was of utmost importance, especially with expensive gas detectors
- Sharing documentation across multiple proprietary platforms was technically difficult
- No time or budget to create a proprietary solution
- Their old solution did not meet all their working criteria
- Work in dangerous environments meant that safety was priority number one.
RESULTS
By integrating Onix into their operations, Shell Norway has enhanced workplace safety but also to improved overall operational efficiency. The partnership with Onix has enabled Shell to have a centralized, up-to-date overview of equipment status, including certificates and inspection dates, which has been a significant improvement from previous systems.
One of the most noticeable benefits Shell has experienced from implementing Onix is the time savings associated with managing certificates for equipment purchased from Certex Norway, who also uses Onix. By having the supplier enter the certificates directly into the Onix database, Shell eliminated the need for manual data transfer, which was previously a time-consuming process. This has not only saved time for employees but also reduced the potential for errors, ensuring that all necessary documentation is always readily available and up-to-date.
The Onix digital tool suite has enabled a more efficient daily operational flow, where Onix Work serves as a portal for retrieving certificates and checking documentation, Tool Store provides an overview of where equipment is and who has it, and Inspector is used for handling inspections. This has given Shell better control over their equipment, improved tracking of valuable devices such as gas meters, and ensured they are always in compliance with safety standards and requirements.
The collaboration with Onix has also led to innovation and customization of new features that directly meet Shell's needs. This includes the development of a more integrated equipment and access control using QR codes, which has improved both efficiency and security. The partnership with Onix has proven to be a key strategic advantage for Shell Norway, by promoting continuous improvement and innovation in the management of critical operational equipment.
