Overview

  • Odfjell Technology Rig Inspection Services (RIS) is the expert inspection, installation, rope access, crane and lifting services arm of Odfjell Technology – a global provider of offshore operations, well services and engineering solutions.
  • Its skilled EOC technicians inspect, maintain and repair a wide range of equipment including crane and lifting. The team also owns and maintains a wide range of internal equipment such as lifting and rope access equipment.
  • As part of a company-wide initiative to reduce operational risk and improve flexibility, the Odfjell Technology RIS team began exploring new and existing solutions to reduce the paperwork burden of offshore inspections.
  • The team took a deep dive into Onix Work tools and realized the potential for improving efficiency and ensuring quality for customers with Onix Inspect
  • Odfjell Technology RIS has now fully adopted Onix Inspect for all offshore inspections, including NDT, and uses an Onix Tool Store solution developed with Certex to reduce the costs of internal equipment ownership.

Problem

Inspections

Odfjell Technology Rig Inspection Services (RIS) offers expert EOC inspections of a wide range of equipment including fixed and loose lifting equipment, rope access and fall protection equipment. Rig inspections require many types of checks and must be accompanied by specific documentation. Traditionally these processes have been heavily paper based which was time consuming for inspectors and documentation teams.

Odfjell Technology had been exploring digital solutions for these challenges for some time. The company needed a tool for offshore inspections that could replace paperwork processes to improve efficiency and accuracy. As part of a company-wide drive to reduce operational risk, improve flexibility and boost knowledge of the market, the Odfjell Technology RIS team began exploring new and existing digital tools.

Internal equipment inventory

The team also experienced challenges relating to their internal equipment inventory. Servicing on and offshore requires a variety of tools and equipment for safe and professional performance. Meeting compliance requirements and having easy access to an accurate overview of critical equipment including its location and availability in an understandable system was a challenge. Odfjell Technology RIS began looking for a solution to gain better flexibility around equipment. An existing IFS solution was not fast or adaptable enough to manage the team’s turnaround of equipment.

Solution

Odfjell Technology began using Onix Work for inspection work in 2019. The company used digital inspection tools in Onix Inspect to simplify offshore inspections. Despite using the software, the team hadn’t fully explored its potential for customers or for internal processes. After a deep dive into existing systems as part of the company-wide improvement initiative, Odfjell Technology RIS started exploring the full range of tools Onix had to offer.

Checklists in Onix Inspect

Checklists within Onix Inspect have now become a key tool for the Odfjell team. Technicians can easily conduct inspections on their handheld devices onsite, with a clear guide to all the steps they need to complete. This helps to ensure that all the correct processes are fulfilled to provide the same high-quality services and documentation to customers every time.

Tools for NDT inspections

Odfjell Technology RIS also became the very first customer to use the Onix NDT checklist designer. This new tool allows inspectors to meet customer NDT documentation requirements with customized NDT checklists and certificate templates.

Onix Tool Store for equipment flexibility

To address the internal equipment needs while reducing the cost of investing in a permanent inventory, Odfjell Technology RIS began working with Onix and Certex to implement a Tool Store solution. The solution uses Onix Tool Store software and a physical equipment store onsite owned by supplier Certex. When the team require a new item of equipment, they simply take it from the equipment store, and it will be automatically registered with Certex. All documentation is transferred to Odfjell’s Onix account for compliance, while an inventory list for billing is created for Certex

Result

A commitment to exploring digital tools for inspections and equipment management has helped Odfjell technology prioritize efficiency, quality and cost saving.

The RIS team provides the highest quality inspections alongside the highest quality documentation for every job. Inspections are simpler and faster with digital and easily accessible checklists. This means the team can easily meet customer requirements for all types of inspections including NDT.

At the same time, Odfjell Technology RIS has achieved efficiency internally – both in relation to cost and time. With the new Tool Store solution, the team has access to all the equipment they need, whenever they need it, without the costs or potential delays of owning the whole inventory. This has helped improve planning and enable the team to provide the best level of service for customers

Kristoffer Fjeldstad, Discipline Lead for Crane and Lifting at Odfjell Technology RIS said:

“As most other companies, we relied heavily on digital tools to reduce the paperwork, however the digital tools in use were as cumbersome as the physical paperwork and not scalable enough to meet our vision. We decided to take the next step by looking into how we could reduce the amount of digital paperwork to ease the workflow and ensure high quality in line with our vision.”

Onix proved to be the technology needed to kickstart this transition into a more cloud-based existence.
