Problem

The Marinspect team supports shipowners managing large volumes of equipment that must be inspected, repaired, and documented to meet legal requirements. These processes are time-consuming, paperwork-heavy, and must be completed quickly to avoid costly operational delays. This places pressure on the team to be for accuracy and efficiency.

Previously, Marinspect relied on manual workflows, including Excel and PDF creation. Lifting equipment inspections could require a full day of admin work to complete and share reports.

To reduce internal workload and improve efficiency, the team began searching for digital solutions that could streamline processes and enhance customer experience. The aim was to find a simple self-service solution that would modernize compliance work.

Solution

Marinspect discovered Onix and saw the potential its digital collaborative tools could have for employees and customers.

The team began using Onix Inspect for simple, digital lifting equipment inspections. They now:

  1. Open the Onix Inspect app on their handheld or desktop device.
  2. Scan QR codes on customer equipment, search using serial numbers, or set up a new item.
  3. Complete inspections with simple digital checks.
  4. Use tools within the application such as flagging repairs with images and annotations.
  5. Automatically generate inspection certificates and documents
  6. Share documents with customers instantly through an online portal
  7. Track when equipment needs inspecting again to support and advise customers on compliance.

Marinspect also began tagging equipment with Onix QR tags for customers. When equipment is tagged it can be scanned with a smartphone or tablet to give access to essential documentation, inspection statuses and history. Workers onboard ships can easily check whether equipment is safe to use, and shipowners gain extra control and peace of mind.

Result

With Onix, Marinspect can save hours of work per inspection. This helps the team work more efficiently and turn around inspections quickly for customers. Customers are happy to receive digital documentation through the Onix Express portal where they can easily access and download it.

As one of the first to use Onix in the Netherlands, Marinspect can also offer a unique QR tagging service to customers. The team tags equipment so that customers can easily identify it onboard vessels. Workers can scan the tags and check that equipment is safe to use.

Marc Heneweer Managing Director - Marinspect Netherlands, pointed to this feature as a big development for the industry:

“This is the first time I have seen this kind of tagging in the industry, and it is clear to me that it can help shipowners a lot. They often don’t know what equipment they have and that creates risk. Equipment can be lost track of, used incorrectly and ultimately contribute to accidents.”
Marc Heneweer Managing Director, Marinspect Netherlands

Marc sees that with Onix, everyone onboard a vessel can take a more active role in safety. At the same time, digital collaboration means equipment owners and inspectors can work together to ensure equipment is inspected, maintained and documented correctly.

These methods of working will become ever more important as global regulations such as SOLAS push shipowners to focus on continuous compliance.

“Digital is the way the industry is going. With Onix it’s easy for us to complete inspections and easier for our customers check any item of equipment, keep on top of inspections and see expiry dates.
