NorSea Polarbase offers the most complete port, stock and real estate services for the Barents Sea. The base is a key resource for offshore operators in the far north, with an expert team working alongside over 40 suppliers to offer a wide range of services from warehousing to lifting and personnel.
Providing these services requires over 250 different types of equipment including lifting equipment and vehicles. Many items require regular checks and inspections to ensure they are safe to use and compliant with relevant regulations.
Keeping control of this amount of equipment across a 550,000m2 area of base is a logistical challenge. Staff struggled to locate and identify equipment, which was used often, moved around the base and subject to a lot of wear and tear. When they did find the right equipment, daily processes such as pre-use checks were time-consuming and required paperwork or verbal reports of finds to managers. This made it difficult to maintain a proper equipment overview, plan for maintenance and repair, and ensure employees were adhering to the correct processes.
NorSea Polarbase identified these issues and began looking for new solutions that would make work on the base easier, safer and more efficient.

NorSea Polarbase have over 250 different types of equipment including lifting equipment and vehicles.
NorSea Polarbase identified Onix Work as a solution to challenges with equipment control. Onix Work gives a real-time digital overview of all equipment. It allows equipment managers to track every item and see its status, history, use and any related issues. This means managers can easily identify maintenance needs and quickly bring equipment back into service to prevent downtime.
The company has also fully committed to the use of Onix Worker for pre-use checks and on-site reporting. Onix Worker is an application for handheld devices that provides a complete overview of the status of each item of equipment as well as pre-use checks. Workers simply scan Onix QR or RFID tags on equipment to gain access to information and complete required pre-use checklists that have been customized by NorSea equipment managers. Workers can also take pictures and add descriptions to make reports more specific. These checks ensure that equipment is safe to use while helping to flag issues that can support managers in maintenance and repair planning.
NorSea Polarbase now uses Onix Worker for all employees working with equipment that requires checks, maintenance, inspection or documentation. The company also benefits from the wider network effect of the Onix platform with new equipment supplied by companies such as Nortech Services inputted directly into NorSea’s Onix account.

With Onix Tags workers can simply scan a QR code with their mobile phone, using the Onix Worker app to perform pre-use checks and onsite reporting.
With a digital solution that is accessible to every member of the team, NorSea Polarbase has established a new safety culture and a new level of control.
Everyone on base takes an active role in safety procedures as part of their daily work. They also save time and effort by using simple tools that give access to all essential information at their fingertips.
Equipment users such as forklift drivers can easily locate and identify trucks, access daily checklists and report issues instantly using Onix Worker. Equipment managers can see updates and plan for maintenance in real-time. This gives everyone working on base the information they need to complete their work efficiently, while giving peace of mind on safety and compliance.
Tom-Eirik Johnsen is Technical Leader at NorSea Polarbase and has been integral to the adoption of Onix Work and Worker as everyday tools for the team. Despite admitting to not being the most technical person, he said he got used to using the tool very easily:
