Overview

  • Bilfinger is a global industrial services provider that needed to modernize its inspection processes to improve efficiency.
  • The company relied on a mixture of paper checklists and old databases for equipment inspections. This was time consuming and limiting for both employees and customers.
  • With Onix Inspect, Bilfinger could use digital devices onsite with pre-prepared checklist and send reports as soon as an inspection was completed.
  • The result was a significant time saving for Bilfinger inspectors and an improvement in the quality of service for customers.

About Bilfinger

Bilfinger is a global industrial services provider based in Mannheim, Germany. The company specializes in equipment inspections in the Nordics through its engineering and maintenance division. In Norway, this division is made up of 40 inspectors based across five locations.

The Problem

Equipment inspections can be time consuming and frustrating at the best of times. Inspectors must locate and check as many as 100 individual pieces of equipment per day. That requires focus and accurate documentation to meet customer needs.

If inspections take place with outdated processes, for example paper notes and documentation, things can quickly become more difficult than they need to be.

This was a situation Bilfinger found itself in, with inspectors limited by heavy paper-based processes. Customers would have to wait for completed documentation until after the inspector had returned from the site visit, submitted paper documentation manually and created a report. As a result, inspection turnarounds could be long, particularly when significant distances had to be travelled to site.

The Solution

Bilfinger sought a digital solution that would save its inspectors valuable time and allow them to focus on their most important tasks.

Bilfinger chose to modernize its processes with Onix’s equipment compliance management software (ECMS), Onix Work. Onix Work is an overarching software used to manage, store and share data internally and externally. Onix Inspect is an additional mobile and desktop module used during inspections to record work on-site using pre-defined templates.

With Onix Inspect, Bilfinger inspectors were able to work offline from their devices while on-site. Using editable checklist templates, they could easily document equipment compliance on the move. When completed, they simply upload the checklists and automatically generate reports and certificates for customers.

This digital process includes the potential to take pictures of equipment to add further valuable details to reports. QR codes can also be attached to equipment for ease of identification and documentation.

The Onix team provided training and support throughout the learning and startup process.

The Result

With Onix Work, Bilfinger has attained an efficient paperless solution that saves time and energy for its inspectors. It also improves service and deliverables for Bilfinger customers.

Bilfinger inspectors now spend a fraction of their time on write-ups and documentation. They can deliver reports immediately after inspections and are spared the headache of outdated processes.

Eivind Mørch, Section Manager for Cranes and Safety, Bilfinger E&M Nordics said of the Onix solution:

“The only drawback of working so efficiently is that you don’t have to finish the paperwork when you come back to the office anymore, because it’s already done before you leave the inspection, I almost miss the slow and peaceful work of filling out paper reports over a cup of coffee.”
Eivind Mørch, Section Manager for Cranes and Safety, Bilfinger E&M Nordics

While it may take some time to get used to new processes, particularly for those who have worked with paper processes throughout their careers, Eivind stressed that “it’s definitely faster and more efficient”. When it comes to younger inspectors, he believes they “love it”.

Bilfinger is so happy with the Onix solution that it is now a requirement for any equipment supplier it uses to have Onix Work. This means all new equipment documentation goes directly into the software saving “an extreme amount of work” for Bilfinger according to Eivind.

Onix provides an open platform that encourages collaboration across the equipment value chain for the benefit of all. Bilfinger demonstrates how these benefits can be experienced for inspectors, equipment owners and suppliers.
