Overview

  • Global leader in open hatch cargo shipping, G2 Ocean, required a system for equipment management that would make compliance simple for over 1 million pieces of equipment worldwide.
  • The company has equipment on vessels and across ports at 290 locations.
  • This equipment was managed manually with Excel, physical documents, phone calls and emails. It took over 40 hours per week and caused headaches for employees.
  • To improve processes and develop stronger safety and compliance practices, G2 Ocean began using Onix for equipment management and inspections.
  • All G2 Ocean contractors worldwide use Onix to document equipment compliance. This creates one standardized system for complete control.
  • As a result, G2 Ocean saves over 20 hours on equipment management per week and can ensure compliance for every piece of equipment across the globe.
“Onix has allowed us to set one standard across the company. If you can standardize the way your business works, then you’re a long way towards achieving safety, compliance and good control of your equipment.”
Richard Stannard, Senior Equipment Manager, G2 Ocean

About G2 Ocean

G2 Ocean is the world’s largest ship operator within the open-hatch segment. The Norwegian headquartered maritime giant has a fleet of 120 vessels that carried over 27 million tons of cargo to 60 countries with over 3,500 port calls in 2024. The company reaches every continent except Antarctica and delivers cargo of all types from raw materials and agricultural products to project cargo such as wind turbines.

Problem

To load, secure and unload this cargo, a huge amount of equipment is required. In total, the company has over 1,670,417 non-serialized bulk items such as slings and dunnage bags, and 6,700 serialized assets such as lifting frames, chains and hooks. These items are spread across 290 locations and often move with the ships they serve.

Keeping track of equipment, ensuring it is compliant and safe to use, is a huge task. It requires an overview of a wide range of equipment that is spread across hundreds of locations. The equipment is often used and inspected by third party contractors on-site that have different systems and procedures. This makes equipment management extremely complex.

With manual systems such as Microsoft Excel and paper filing, along with communications channels such as email and phone, equipment management was taking over 40 hours per week. It also caused constant stress for the equipment team as they worked to keep documentation updated in compliance with regulations, and equipment safe to use.

G2 Ocean needed a solution that would save time, reduce stress and ensure compliance no matter where equipment was in the world, or who was using it.

Solution

G2 Ocean began looking for a digital tool that could become its standard system for equipment compliance globally. The company required a system that was open to many stakeholders and employees across locations. It also needed to be easy to use and able to save time for equipment managers.

Onix was chosen as that system. G2 Ocean began implementing Onix Work for complete equipment management. All equipment that required control and maintenance was inputted into Onix Work. Here, all documents and history could be stored, shared and updated digitally in one place.

To make Onix a platform for all, G2 Ocean began requiring its inspectors worldwide to conduct inspections of its equipment with Onix Inspect. All updates and documents could then be shared directly in G2 Ocean’s Onix account.

To further enhance simplicity, G2 Ocean began tagging equipment with QR and RFID tags. These tags can be scanned for instant access to equipment information for dock workers and G2 Ocean employees. They can also speed up identification during inspections.

In addition, the company began using Onix Worker for dockside preventative maintenance work and Onix Tool Store alongside a new projects module for sending and receiving equipment.

Result

With Onix, G2 Ocean has taken back control of its equipment and has complete overview of items anywhere in the world.

Whether in head office in Bergen, on the dock in Vlissingen, or on a vessel traversing key trade routes, everyone has access to the right information and tools for safety and compliance.

G2 Ocean has gained full overview of the status of its equipment and can ensure procedures are followed correctly no matter where the equipment is in the world.

That means the company has been able to:

  • Ensure equipment compliance.
  • Improve safety practices.
  • Save over 20 hours per week on equipment management.
  • Improve efficiency and reduce lost time with better planning.
  • Save costs associated with all the above.

By implementing these changes, G2 ocean has set a precedent for equipment compliance management and safety in the maritime space. This is testament to the company’s constant focus on improvements, particularly within HSSE.

Richard Stannard, Senior Equipment Manager at G2 Ocean and Onix expert, reflected on the importance of adopting a standardized system: “Onix has allowed us to set one standard across the company. If you can standardize the way your business works, then you’re a long way towards achieving safety, compliance and good control of your equipment.”

As a result of the successes of this project, G2 Ocean is now working proactively with Onix to develop new functionality for the maritime sector with strengthened location tracking. It is important to Onix to work collaboratively with customers to meet their unique needs.
